Lindbergh Foundation Celebrates 35th Anniversary with
Astronauts Neil Armstrong, James Lovell & Eugene Cernan
LAKELAND FL, SUN N FUN CAMPUS (March 27, 2012) —The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation announced that Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell and Eugene Cernan will be the featured speakers at a 35th Anniversary celebration dinner at The Explorers Club in New York City on May 18th.
“We are thrilled to have Apollo astronauts Armstrong, Lovell and Cernan—three special members of the extended Lindbergh Foundation family—join us for this chance to honor 35 years of achievement in carrying out the vision they have each helped to further,” said Lindbergh Foundation Chairman and CEO Larry Williams. Noting the historical significance of having founding- and Board-emeritus members on hand at the very place where the Foundation began, Williams added, “We’re looking forward to hearing what these visionaries foresaw for the Lindbergh Foundation, and what they encourage us to pursue going forward in the vital work of seeking balance between technology and our environment.” Also speaking will be the Foundation’s Honorary Chairman, Reeve Lindbergh, youngest daughter of Charles and Anne Morrow and a noted author.
Following a reception and dinner for about 100 invited guests, Capt. Lovell, who served on the Foundation’s first Board, will share his recollections of the vision for the Foundation during the early years. Capt. Cernan will reflect on receiving the Lindbergh Spirit Award in 2007, and his impressions of the Foundation and its role today in encouraging creative technologies to solve some of aviation’s environmental challenges. Astronaut Armstrong will offer his perspective on the Lindbergh Foundation, and his recollections of working with Jimmy Doolittle who served with him as national co-chair of the fundraising effort that endowed the Lindbergh Foundation.
“There was quite a who’s-who that gathered to establish a living memorial to honor the
Lindberghs,” observed Vice-Chairman David Treinis, who also serves as the chairman of the Award Selection Committee. “Luminaries and friends of the Lindberghs including C.R. Smith, president of American Airlines; Charles Tillinghast, Chairman of Trans World Airways; Juan Tripp, Chairman of Pan Am; Sam Pryor; Arthur Godfrey, and several others were instrumental in creating the enduring legacy of the Lindbergh Foundation.” Treinis added that the roster of Lindbergh Foundation’s Board today continues to reflect the heritage of asking aviation’s influencers to serve in honoring the spirit of two of history’s most famous pilots, Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh.
Information on the 35th Anniversary Celebration may be found on the Lindbergh Foundation website. Admission to the evening’s program will be by invitation only.

Foundation Background
The Lindbergh Foundation is a public non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, based in Minnesota, which supports great innovations that foster the environment to keep the planet in balance.
The Lindbergh Foundation accomplishes its mission through three major programs:
The Lindbergh Award ~ Annually, the Foundation presents its honorary Lindbergh Award for individuals who have made significant contributions toward the balance between technology and the environment, in their work.
Lindbergh Grants ~ in amounts up to $10,580 (the cost of building the Spirit of St. Louis in 1927), are given to individuals whose proposed research or education projects will make important contributions to the technology/environment balance;
Educational Programs and Publications ~ centered on the balance theme.
One of the Lindbergh Foundation’s core values is to honor individual initiative and accomplishment in researchers, scientists, and explorers. In doing so, the Lindberghs, who were each outstanding individual contributors to society – through aviation, writing, and environmental conservation, are also honored. Unquestionably, Charles Lindbergh is best known for his historic New York-to-Paris flight in the Spirit of St. Louis. It is much less known that the Lindberghs held a unique perspective on the Earth stemming from Charles’ boyhood growing up on the banks of the Mississippi River outside Little Falls, Minn., his barnstorming days in the early 1920s, and the survey flights around the world he and Anne pioneered in the 1930s. Over the years, the Lindberghs witnessed enormous changes in the land, sky and water in the name of progress. Their concern for the environment became the basis upon which the Foundation was established.
Friends of the Lindberghs at The Explorers Club in New York City established the organization in 1977 (the 50th anniversary year of Charles Lindbergh’s historic New York-to-Paris flight). General James H. Doolittle and Astronaut Neil Armstrong led the national fund raising campaign for the fledgling organization.
